How to Prepare a Professional Board Game Prototype: A Guide for Indie Publishers
Creating a prototype is one of the most exciting steps in the board game development process — it’s when your concept becomes something real you can hold, test, and pitch.
At EdgyGame Manufacture, we work with dozens of indie publishers and designers each month to turn their ideas into beautiful, functional prototypes. Here's what we recommend to ensure a smooth and successful prototyping experience:
1. Finalize Core Design Before Manufacturing
Before requesting a prototype, make sure your game mechanics, component list, and dimensions are well-defined. Avoid major rule changes after sending files — this saves time and cost.
Tip: Use print-and-play or digital tests (like Tabletop Simulator) to refine gameplay first.
2. Prepare Clear Production Files
Files should be provided in print-ready formats (PDF, AI, PSD) with clear bleed, crop marks, and resolution (300dpi). Label each file by component: "Rulebook_v2_EN.pdf", "CardFront_A.psd", etc.
Need help? We can provide dielines and templates for all components — just ask.
3. Decide What to Include in Your Prototype
Do you need the full box, or just cards and rulebook? Are tokens necessary at this stage? Consider your goals:
-
For internal testing → basic components
-
For pitching to publishers → complete look
-
For crowdfunding photos → retail-style box and finish
4. Communicate Special Requirements Early
Want linen texture cards, magnetic box lids, or UV spot on the logo? Mention these custom finishes from the start. Some effects can't be applied in sample runs — we’ll guide you on what’s feasible.
5.Timeline and Shipping
A prototype usually takes 7–14 working days to complete, depending on complexity. We can ship globally via express service — delivery typically takes 3–7 days.
